Where AI Actually Saves Teachers Time

The Gallup and Walton survey is specific about where the hours come back. One honest caveat is worth stating in a field this important. The “six weeks” figure is self-reported. At least one education researcher has questioned whether teachers accurately estimate their own time savings once the review-and-edit work is counted. The Catch: You Can’t Police What AI Writes

Here is the half of the story the tool lists leave out. Students have AI too, and you can’t reliably tell when they use it. The obvious response, an AI detector, doesn’t work, and institutions are now saying so out loud. In September 2025 the University of Waterloo discontinued Turnitin’s AI detector. It cited peer-reviewed evidence that the tools are unreliable and biased against non-native English speakers, and in its own testing the tool flagged human-written text as “100% generated by AI.” A false accusation is a serious harm, especially to the students least able to defend themselves. That is why a growing number of universities have now disabled or discouraged AI detection.

So the durable move isn’t detection; it’s assessment design. Bring more writing back into the classroom, ask students to show drafts and revisions, weight process and oral explanation alongside the final product, and be explicit about when AI use is allowed and when it isn’t.
