Type a sentence into Figma Make and you get an interactive, high-fidelity prototype. No boxes. No grey rectangles. No lorem ipsum. So a fair question in 2026 is whether the wireframe, a deliberately ugly draft whose whole purpose was to be cheap, still earns the hour you spend on it.
The honest answer is that it depends on what you’re trying to decide, and that distinction is what this guide is built around. Wireframes were never really about saving drawing time. They were about forcing a conversation on structure before anyone argued about colour. AI has made the drawing free. It has not made the conversation unnecessary.
So instead of ranking eight tools that mostly do the same thing, this guide sorts them by the decision you’re making. Structure, screens, or flow. And it starts with the question you should answer before you open any of them.
How we compiled this: every price, plan name, credit allowance and free-tier limit below was read off the vendor’s own pricing page on 16 August 2026. We have not run a controlled comparison of output quality, and we don’t publish speed or quality scores, because no independent 2026 benchmark of these tools exists that we would stand behind. Where a vendor doesn’t publish a number, this guide says so rather than estimating. All prices are in USD before local sales tax or VAT, and are per editor or seat except Framer, which prices per site.

What the research actually says, including the part that cuts against this
It would be convenient to claim the evidence shows wireframes dying. It doesn’t, and pretending otherwise would be the easy version of this article.
Nielsen Norman Group’s work on this introduced the idea of a promptframe, defined as “a design deliverable that documents content goals and requirements for generative-AI prompts based on a wireframe’s layout and functionality.” Read that definition closely. The promptframe is built on a wireframe’s layout, sits between wireframes and prototypes, and NN/g presents it as an addition to a workflow that still begins with sketches and simple wireframes. That article is from 2024, so treat it as the established baseline rather than a 2026 finding, but its direction is the opposite of the “wireframes are obsolete” claim circulating on design social media.
What has moved in 2026 is adoption, not abolition. Figma’s State of the Designer 2026, published 12 February 2026 and based on 906 digital designers surveyed by the research firm NewtonX across North America, APAC, Europe, LATAM and the Middle East, found 91% saying AI tools improve their designs, 89% working faster, 80% collaborating better, and designers who lean into AI 25% more likely to report job satisfaction. Worth flagging that Figma sells design tools, so this is a vendor-published survey, though the sample size, regions and independent fieldwork are all disclosed.
Put the two together and you get the position this guide takes, which is our reading rather than a finding in either source. Designers report working faster with AI across the board, and the step it compresses is the drawing, not the deciding. Skip the wireframe when there is nothing left to decide.
The tools, by what you’re deciding
Each tool below gets one job, because in practice that’s how they differ. Prices are per editor or seat per month unless noted, and Framer prices per site. All read from each vendor’s pricing page on 16 August 2026.
Deciding site structure: Relume
Relume is the pick when the question is “what pages should exist,” not “what goes on this page.” Its AI Site Builder starts at the sitemap and works down to wireframes, which is the right order for a marketing site, a service site or a redesign where page inventory is the actual problem.
Two 2026 changes worth knowing. It has moved to relume.ai, with the old relume.io address now redirecting. And it has pushed hard into the AI-editor ecosystem: the Relume Library MCP went live on 1 July 2026, putting its component library inside AI code editors, following a Claude Design integration in May.
The free plan is tighter than most: 1 user, 1 project, 1 wireframe page, 30 Webflow and 30 React components, and limited AI usage. Starter raises that to 5 wireframe pages; Pro gives unlimited projects and pages plus export to Figma, Webflow and React; Team starts at 3 users. Relume doesn’t render its prices without JavaScript, so we’re not quoting figures we couldn’t read directly.
Deciding app screens: Visily
Visily is the strongest fit for product and app screens when nobody on the team is a designer. It takes text prompts, screenshots and sketches, and its output stays editable rather than arriving as a flat image you have to recreate.
Pricing is genuinely accessible: a Starter plan at $0 including 300 AI credits a month per workspace, about ten generated screens, with standard AI design, then Pro at $11 per editor per month billed annually, and a higher tier at $29. For a founder validating an app concept before hiring a designer, that free allowance does real work.
Deciding to stay low-fidelity on purpose: Balsamiq
Balsamiq deserves a correction, because plenty of roundups still file it under “not really an AI tool.” In 2026 it ships Balsamiq AI, which drafts a wireframe from a screenshot, a hand-drawn sketch or a sentence and edits on command, plus AI prototyping and a Balsamiq MCP server.
Its actual value is the deliberate ugliness. The sketchy, obviously-unfinished style is the feature: it stops a stakeholder review turning into a discussion about button colour. If your problem is that people react to the visuals instead of the structure, that constraint is worth more than another generator.
Plans are Starter $16 per editor per month billed annually ($192/year, up to 10 projects, 500 AI credits), Teams $24 ($288/year, up to 100 projects, 1,000 credits) and Enterprise $35 ($420/year, up to 400 projects, 2,500 credits). Reviewers are unlimited and free on every tier, which matters more than it sounds when the whole point is getting feedback.
Deciding fast with no design background: Uizard
Uizard is the lowest-friction way to get a multi-screen concept out of your head, via Autodesigner 2.0, a screenshot scanner and sketch conversion. Note for anyone assessing vendor risk: Uizard has been part of Miro since 2024, and the product continues to ship independently.
Read the free tier carefully before you plan around it. Free is $0 but allows 3 AI generations per month on the older Autodesigner 1.5 engine, with 2 projects. That’s an evaluation allowance, not a working one. Pro is $12 per month billed annually, with a higher tier at $39.
Deciding inside a team that already lives in Figma: Figma
If your team already works in Figma, the honest advice is to wireframe there and stop shopping. The reason isn’t AI quality, it’s that handoff is where wireframing projects usually leak time, and a wireframe that already lives beside the design system doesn’t need handoff at all.
Figma’s free tier gives unlimited drafts and 150 AI credits a day, capped at 500 a month. Professional is $16 per full seat per month with 3,000 AI credits, with dev seats at $12 and collaborator seats at $3. Organization is $55 per full seat with 3,500 credits, and Enterprise $90 with 4,250. Advanced Dev Mode inspection and an MCP server sit on the higher tiers.
Deciding with real logic, not pictures: UXPin
UXPin is the outlier here and the most expensive, because it isn’t drawing pictures of interfaces. It builds code-backed prototypes with real logic, variables and expressions, which is what you want when the thing you need to validate is behaviour rather than layout.
Core is $29 per seat per month on annual billing ($49 month to month) and Growth $40 (against $69). Core includes 200 AI credits a month and Growth 500, billed per account rather than per seat, with extra packs on top: 200 for $13, 500 for $31, 750 for $46, 1,000 for $61, 1,500 for $88 and 2,000 for $115 a month. It’s still the most expensive tool here, but roughly twice the cheapest rather than three times.
Deciding a landing page that ships: Framer
Framer barely belongs in a wireframing guide, and that’s precisely when to use it. For a landing page, the wireframe and the finished page are close enough that going through a low-fidelity stage is a detour. Framer takes you to something publishable.
Free is $0 with 500 credits to try, Basic is $10 a month with 1,000 monthly credits, and Pro is $30 a month with 3,000. Additional editors are $20 a month and viewers are free. Watch the metered extras if the site grows: pages beyond the plan limit run $20 per 100, and bandwidth overage $40 per 100 GB.
Deciding to skip the wireframe: Figma Make
Figma Make is the tool that makes this whole question live, and it’s the notable absence from most wireframing roundups. It’s a prompt-to-app tool that produces an interactive, high-fidelity prototype from a natural-language description, and it runs on the same AI credit allowance as the rest of Figma.
Use it for the right column of the table above: when structure is settled and you need something clickable in front of a stakeholder. Don’t reach for it when you’re still deciding what screens exist, because a polished artefact makes structural criticism socially harder, which is the exact failure mode wireframes were invented to prevent.
What these tools actually cost, and the credit trap
Entry price is the number everyone compares and the one that matters least. Every tool in this guide except Relume, which doesn’t publish figures without JavaScript, now meters AI separately from the seat.
Cheapest paid plan per month, on annual billing
Here’s the part worth your attention. Most vendors sell AI credits without telling you what a credit buys, so “3,000 credits a month” is unfalsifiable until you’ve spent them.
Two vendors do publish the conversion, and they’re the two worth copying. Visily’s is the most granular, costing each action directly: 30 credits to generate a screen (90 in deep-design mode), 10 for a component, prototype, diagram or image, and 15 for code generation. That makes its free 300 credits a month exactly ten screen generations, which is a number you can plan around. Balsamiq publishes at plan level instead: 500 credits covers around 31 wireframes or 10 prototypes, 1,000 around 62 or 20, and 2,500 around 156 or 50. Those ratios are consistent, working out to roughly 16 credits per wireframe and 50 per prototype at every tier. Everyone else leaves you to find out by spending, which is a fair question to put to a salesperson.

What AI still gets wrong at low fidelity
Three failure modes show up consistently, and all three come from the same root: these tools are very good at producing something plausible and have no opinion about whether it’s right.
- It generates a page, not a flow. Ask for a checkout and you’ll get a handsome checkout screen. What happens on a declined card, an expired session or a partial refund is where the real design problems live, and prompts rarely surface them because you have to know to ask.
- Plausible hierarchy isn’t considered hierarchy. The output will put something prominent. Whether that thing is what your business needs prominent is a judgment the model isn’t making, and a tidy-looking draft makes it easy to skip the check.
- Fidelity creeps upward, and feedback changes with it. The more finished a draft looks, the more reviewers comment on polish and the less they challenge structure. That’s not a tooling bug, it’s a social effect, and it’s the strongest argument for keeping a deliberately rough stage when the structure is genuinely unsettled.
The practical guard is cheap. Before you take any generated draft to a review, say out loud what decision you want out of the meeting. If the answer is a structural one, turn the fidelity down.
